She Burns (Feat. Mara Carlyle) – Joe Goddard

Joe Goddard of indie rock band Hot Chip has put out a new track from his forthcoming coming Taking Over EP, which is out later this year. This drawn-out, eight-minute cut, “She Burns,” features vocals from British singer/songwriter Mara Carlyle, and it is similar to something you would find on a Caribou album, especially the song “Bowls” from 2010′s Swim.

The vocal track I Cry also plays at the boundary of sorrow and optimism. Aquatic piano chords, crisp hats and a cascading bassline play beneath a gorgeous vocal from Dublin-born newcomer Gemma Dunleavy. More than a shiver-inducing UK bass track, it’s an emotionally bruising song.

Warm in the Winter – Glass Candy

Glass Candy’s “Warm in the Winter” has been released again as the lead track off the label’s compilation album, After Dark 2, and it is just as relevant now as it was in 2011. Musically it fits in with the other track by their “Italians Do It Better” label mates, but lyrically it is a bright spot on the album, where warm and uplifting lyrics are few and far between.

It only seems fitting that the title to Vampire Weekend’s latest single is the name of one of the past decade’s most iconic pop songs flipped around. Its a confrontation with a higher power, a theme found throughout their 3rd LP, Modern Vampires of the City. “Ya Hey” is a grand, ambitious track that shows off the band’s artistic confidence and acts as a capstone on their journey through these three albums. Vampire Weekend is growing and looking toward the future, and while this isn’t the best song on the album, it lets us know that their work is still not finished. The video features slow-motion footage of bottle-popping from a rooftop that overlooks New York City’s Chrysler Building.
